Hey guys, it's Mica. This is my first post and I am really excited to be a part of the Like A Local Family. Over the past few years, I have seen Oklahoma City develop a love for local businesses like you wouldn’t believe, and that is what has inspired me to write this post.
It seems as though the Thunder not only brought us an NBA basketball team, but also pride in our city and support for all things Oklahoma. Much of that has come, not from commercial investment, but from small business minded entrepreneurs, who pride themselves on locally made products.
Pretty much everyone knows about Black Friday; people storm the malls and department stores waiting for hours on end to get the deal of the year on gifts for their loved ones. This year I want to suggest something different! Small Business Saturday. It is November 26th and is a day where communities can come together to #ShopSmall and support their local small businesses. Here is a list of some of my favorite places to shop local and shop small for the holidays in the OKC area.
Online
OK Collective One of my favorite things about this local business are the owners. Meeting Kelli and Jessi and made me love this business even more! Their all natural soy candles are made by hand with some of the most unique fragrance blends. (Oakmoss + Amber - can you say heavenly?) Smell all of their candles in person, at Deluxe OKC on November 26th or if you cannot make it that day, check out their Facebook page for a list of locations they will be at this upcoming season.
Prairie Bloom Body Care
Luxurious all natural, chemical-free bath and body products created locally by hand. This growing business is owned and operated by a local mom and entrepreneur who was inspired to create safer beauty products after becoming pregnant with her first child. Treat yourself, or someone else, to one of her dreamy body butters this holiday.
Freckles Creative Studio
You cannot be sad when browsing this website, color and positivity abounds! Lady entrepreneur, Natalie Spencer, is all about offering stationery and other products that make people smile and bring happiness to office spaces everywhere. Check out her new gift boxes to simplify shopping for all those hard working boss ladies on your list.
Local Lather Laboratory and Soap Shop
This mobile soap shop is a tiny home on wheels! Owner Meg Rinehart and husband Levi, run this humble business side by side, bringing beautiful handmade products to the OKC area. Local Lather strives to provide sustainable, natural, handcrafted soap and bath products to their customers. Find out where their mobile soap shop will be located by following @locallather on Instagram or visit a one of the many local boutiques that carries their products.
In-Store
Blue Seven & Just OK
Men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, and accessories, an entire room dedicated to jeans, quirky gifts and home goods + all things Oklahoma-made at Just OK. This store is all about supporting the local community and bringing people together. You can expect to find different local food trucks in their parking lot almost every week. Check out their B7 Clean Start Project to see how you can get involved!
Plant Shoppe (and Okay Yeah Co.)
If you like getting your hands dirty and you like coffee, then you will LOVE this place. It feels like you can do it all here! They have workshops, events, DIY terrarium kits to give as gifts, and a DIY succulent bar. PLUS, they are home to Okay Yeah Co., which is a coffee and eatery joint ,where you can get all the homemade tasty goodness and delicious coffee. Stop in on Small Business Saturday Nov. 26th from 4pm-6pm for their Succulents + Sips event to visit them both!
Plenty Mercantile
Located in Automobile Alley, you’ll find an amazing assortment of artisan home goods, decor, jewelry, pet supplies, paper goods, and children’s toys. This includes several awesome local brands! Plenty also has an incredible rooftop venue overlooking the city that is available for parties, weddings, and other events.
Milo & Lily Boutique
Find all the latest trendy women’s clothing at this cute little shop located in the Colonnade in OKC. Whether you’re looking for a statement piece, or something basic, store owner Crystal would love to help you find it! You’ll also find an assortment of jewelry and accessories from local makers.
Shopping Events
Holiday Pop-ups Shops
This is one of my FAVORITE events of the holiday season in OKC. Make the most of your time by getting to shop at several stores at once! These adorable domes are open for business Thursday-Saturday for 5 weeks starting Thanksgiving weekend in Midtown and change every week, which means you need to check them out every weekend. (Plus, food trucks, so... yum!)
Deluxe OKC
The Deluxe Winter Market offers free admission in Downtown Oklahoma City, where unique makers show and sell their work to enthusiastic shoppers from all over the region. Something really cool is the Elf Market. Children under 14 can shop independently, or with the help of a volunteer, for artist-made gifts, all priced under $10.
Final Thought
Whether you decide to check out a store I've discussed or you #ShopSmall somewhere else, I would love to hear from you about where you spent your Small Business Saturday.
